A social media template system: how to stay consistent without redesigning every post
Consistent social media is a system, not a daily design effort. What a template set contains, how a monthly workflow runs, and where design ends and management begins.
The most common reason social media looks inconsistent is that every post is designed from scratch. One week the brand shows in light colours, the next in dark; one post uses one typeface, the next another. A template system prevents that drift and removes the need to decide everything again each month.
What does a template set contain?
- Post formats: separate layouts for single images, carousels and stories.
- Colour and type rules: primary and secondary colours, typefaces for headings and text.
- Ready blocks: layouts for recurring content such as announcements, tips, quotes, case studies and events.
- Image style: the language of photography, icons and illustration.
- Usage rules: logo placement, spacing and what not to do.
How does a monthly workflow run?
- Plan: the month's goals and content themes are set and a posting calendar is made.
- Design: content is designed on the templates; text and images change while the design language stays fixed.
- Approval: the calendar and designs are sent to you and prepared for publishing once you approve.
- Publish and report: posts go out on time, results are reported at month end and the next month's plan is adjusted.
Design only, or management too?
If your team publishes in-house, a template set and monthly designs may be enough. If you also want planning, publishing and reporting handled, you need management. We agree the line between the two with you.
No identity, no templates
A template system sits on top of the brand identity: if colour, typography and tone of voice are unclear, the templates stay inconsistent. That is why we design the identity and the social media in the same team. See our brand identity and social media management pages. You don't need a finished brief: an intro call is a good start.
